FILM #10: BOUNCING THE BOW (book chapter 12)

OVERVIEW: Grade school and junior high school students demonstrate how spiccato playing is first introduced and how to avoid stiffness in playing bouncing bows.

1. Bouncing the bow; balancing the bow with the hand higher on the stick in the 18th and 19th century style; keeping a light grip, curved and relaxed fingers and flexible joints; glancing and slanting the bow hair to get a less percussive and more sustained tone quality

2. Playing spiccato near the frog; at the middle of the bow; with string crossings; various bouncing rhythms and poly rhythms

FILM #10: MARTELÉ AND STACCATO (book chapter 13)

OVERVIEW: Grade school and junior high school students demonstrate how to attack and release the string in martelé and staccato strokes.

3. Playing accented strokes; bow pressure at the beginning of the stroke; releasing pressure as the bow moves; the martelé stroke

4. Wrist, hand and finger positions at the tip and frog; martelé-staccato stroke; playing faster staccato groups on the bow stroke; demonstrations with easy and more difficult pieces
