FILM #4: ESTABLISHING THE VIOLIN HOLD (book chapter 4)>

OVERVIEW: Grade school children demonstrate the basic motion leading to good violin hold. Left hand pizzicato, early shifting movements and games are used to establish correct position, to give an immediate concept of left arm placement in the low, middle and high positions of the fingerboard, and to avoid stiffness that results when the beginner is limited to first position. Correct and incorrect forms are demonstrated.

Part I
1. Good violin playing through balance and free movement

2. A well balanced stance; position of the legs and feet

3. Rest position; brushing the edge of the fingerboard

4. Plucking and tuning; correct positioning of the tail button under the chin; freeing stiffness and tension

Part II
1. Building strength

2. Statue Of Liberty game; positioning the violin under the chin and on the collarbone

3. Seated position (using a chair); making a “V”with the feet; the shuttle game

4. The swinging game (left elbow movement); the tapping game
