FILM #7: ESTABLISHING LEFT HAND AND FINGER PLACEMENT
(book chapter 7)

OVERVIEW: From the start, the student is made aware of the octave relationship of the open string and third finger (cello 0-4). The “Octave Game” and pieces based on the 0-3 finger pattern encourage good left hand position and intonation.

1. Placement of the left hand and fingers on the fingerboard

2. Establishing good left hand position and intonation by playing the upper octaves of the open string and the four tone scale; third finger placement

3. First finger placement and angle; painting a face on the first fingernail

4. Using finger marker guides; the octave game; the problem of long fingernails and flat finger placement; “percussion play”; playing chromatic melodies after the octave placement is learned
